Cross Timbers Arabians and Pintos

Artificial insemination with chilled transported semen.

The benefits of using AI include:
the mare does not have to be transported a long distance in order to be bred and this may be the easiest and safest way to breed a valuable stallion. AI can reduce the risk the risk of reproductive infection in the mare and eliminates the risk of injury of natural cover. As a mare owner to ensure a cost effective AI breeding you need to be aware of the following:

  • Equine pregnancy requires good mare management. It is critical that the mare's ovulation time is coordinated appropriately with the shipped semen arrival. Your vet should be familiar with all aspects of the AI procedure and shipment process. Timing is crucial as is good communication between your breeding manager/vet and the vet that will be handling the stallion collection.
  • Does your breed registry allow AI? If there are special forms, requirements or fees that have to be paid inadvance with the registry, you need to let us know.
  • Your mare should show no evidence of discharge and have a clean uterine culture.
  • You will need to make arrangements for pickup and delivery of the shipped semen in a timely manner.
  • Has your mare been successfully bred with AI in the past? Some mares just don't seem to take by AI, but will by natural cover.

Transported Semen Availability

We require all mares that are to be bred by AI to have a
vet certified clean mare culture within 45 days of request for transported semen. A signed AI breeding contract, copy of vet certificate for clean culture , and copy of registration papers must be received by us with the appropriate booking fee, 1/2 the stallion service fee 1 week prior to request for transported semen. The remainder of the stallion fee is due upon receipt of the first shipment.

We will be using Equiplex Veterinary Hospital, Flower Mound, Texas , 817-430-8145 to do our stallion test collection. They will perform the necessary tests to determine what type of extender works best with Kody so that AI shipments will be of quality. You are financilly responsible for all charges associated with the AI service which would not be incurred with a live cover service. This means you are responsible for any AI stallion certificate/certification fees, all AI related vet and transportation fees.

You will need to make arrangements with us to arrange an appointment with the vet clinic and coordinate transportation back and forth from the vet clinic as well as the vet clinic to bill you directly for all associated vet costs for the stallion collection and preparation of the transported cooled semen.

We will not be responsible for improper timing and shipping. There is only a 24 hour window where the mare's egg will be alive for fertilization. Semen can live for many days, but the egg only lives for 1 day. Equiplex requires you to make an appointment, at least 24 hours in advance of the needed collection.

If your Breed Registry requires a COLLECTION CERTIFICATE or RELATED AI FEE/REPORT or STALLION AI CERTIFICATION, you are responsible for contacting the Breed Organization to get the needed forms/information, plus payment of additional AI related fees must be sent to us.

This fee/forms must be received by us 1 week inadvance of any collection request. Other breed registries may accept AI registration, but require special forms or fees. These special fees will be added to your bill and all necessary forms that need to be filled out by us ,need to be sent to us 1 week before transport request.

You must contact the registry you are interested in registering the resulting foal by AI to find out what is required. Unless special arrangements are made, we only issue a standard breeding form for LIVE COVER for the APHA or PtHA where applicable. The APHA association requires a yearly stallion AI fee to be paid to them, and must issue certificates for AI prior to each shipment. It is in your best interests to understand your beed association rules for AI.
